Practical guide · files stay on your device
Remove location metadata before sharing a photo.
A photo can contain GPS coordinates even when no location appears in the picture. PixelRinse inspects supported embedded metadata on your device. It removes supported metadata categories, rather than offering selective GPS-only editing.

Can PixelRinse clean my file?
Real eligibility requires local inspection of the file and selected operation.
Key takeaways
- Inspect first for free. File format and structure—not the extension alone—determine eligible cleaning.
- Supported EXIF metadata, including embedded GPS when present in supported structures.
- Removing metadata does not hide landmarks, addresses, faces, reflections, or text in pixels.
Example
Synthetic walkthrough, not a recorded camera test: a fictional photo has EXIF GPS coordinates and a visible sign reading “Example Road”. Eligible metadata cleaning removes supported GPS data, but the sign stays in the pixels. The two require separate review.
- Before · illustrative synthetic scenario
- Embedded GPS plus a visible “Example Road” sign.
- After · intended supported scope, not a measured output
- Supported GPS fields removed; the visible sign remains. Confirm removal in your own output report.
Try the local workflow
The demonstration uses a fictional PNG to show the local inspect, clean and verify workflow. It is not proof of GPS, JPEG or PDF capabilities; check the file-support page for those formats.
Open the fictional PNG demonstrationThen explicitly prepare and inspect when prompted, review the fictional findings, and choose Clean example free. Opening this link does not prepare resources or process files.
How to do it safely
- Choose your photo, then explicitly Prepare and inspect if needed. Inspection is free and does not upload the file.
- Review the detected metadata, recognized format, and proposed changes. A filename or extension alone does not prove cleaning support.
- For eligible JPEG or PNG files, keep the preservation defaults. Cleaning and cleaned downloads require Individual Pro.
- Review the verified output and any Not checked results. Open the downloaded file and review visible identifying content before sharing.
What this workflow removes
- Supported EXIF metadata, including embedded GPS when present in supported structures.
- Other supported metadata categories identified by the cleaner—not only location.
What it does not promise
- Removing metadata does not hide landmarks, addresses, faces, reflections, or text in pixels.
- It does not delete location history from your camera, phone, cloud library, or copies already shared.
- HEIC, AVIF and TIFF offer conditional Fresh Export after bounded preflight and actual local decode. HEIC grids and recognized primary/thumbnail/depth/gain-map graphs are distinguished from sequences. Export is primary-only and discards auxiliaries. Some ICC/P3/BT.2020 color mappings have a verified local conversion; HDR-to-SDR exports lose HDR brightness, precision and gamut. Other mappings/layouts still need a verified native or separately validated local path. No real iOS 17 Pro Max coverage is established. Explicit conversion consent is required.
Retained
- Image content: landmarks, faces, readable addresses and other visible location clues.
- Originals, names and copies already shared elsewhere.
Not checked
- A person’s ability to infer location from context, captions or the image.
- All possible vendor-specific fields outside the implemented inspection scope.
Understand the evidence
Look for the output metadata check, not a blanket “location-free” guarantee. No detected GPS is not proof that a person cannot infer a location.
Processing, comparisons and verification receipts stay local. PixelRinse sends no product-usage events. Payment and legacy license upgrades are separate online actions that never include selected file contents, names, hashes or metadata.
Common questions
- Can I remove only the GPS tags?
- No. Supported metadata categories are removed together; there is no GPS-only editing.
- Does a clean result prove the place is hidden?
- No. Pixels, captions and surrounding context can still reveal a location.
More answers
What does PixelRinse do, and what does it promise?
PixelRinse provides private local tools for images, PDFs and metadata, plus supported comparisons and bounded document/media workflows.
Technical details and limits
Choose a working tool and inspect its exact support before processing. Metadata cleaning removes only the supported set; image editors intentionally change pixels. Each result states its checks and limits. No operation promises a file is free of every identifying trace.
Does PixelRinse blur faces or redact visible text?
There is no dedicated face-blurring or document-redaction tool. Metadata cleaning does not remove visible content.
Technical details and limits
Faces, text, license plates and reflections remain in a metadata-cleaned copy. Pixel editors such as background removal, retouching and text watermarks deliberately change images, but do not guarantee anonymization or complete redaction. Use an appropriate redaction workflow and review the final saved file.
What does Verified mean?
Verified means the bounded checks listed in the receipt passed on the rebuilt output.
Technical details and limits
Examples are that it parses, that supported metadata fields are gone and that retained content is intact. It describes those checks only, not every possible hidden trace.
