Practical guide · files stay on your device
Inspection, editing and cleaning answer different questions.
Inspection shows readable fields without changing them. Editing writes or removes selected supported values. Cleaning removes the supported metadata set. Choose the operation before processing; running Clean after an edit can remove values you meant to keep.

Supported input
- Single-picture JPEG/PNG for supported standard XMP editing, and supported PDF document properties/catalog XMP.
- Other formats can have different inspection or cleaning support; the file-support matrix and the actual inspection decide.
Key takeaways
- Inspect first for free. File format and structure—not the extension alone—determine eligible cleaning.
- For editing: the supported requested field changes, checked by reopening the output.
- Metadata editing is not available for every file format or packet structure.
How to do it safely
- Inspect your file locally. Read the supported fields and any Partial or Not checked scope before interpreting an empty list.
- To write descriptive values, open Edit metadata, choose the file and review which fields are editable.
- Set or remove only the supported values you intend to change. Unsupported EXIF/IPTC or other read-only values are not synchronized.
- Export through the existing licensed action. Review the reopened-field verification for the requested writes and removals.
- If removal is the goal instead, use the metadata cleaner and review Removed, Retained and Not checked. Do not automatically clean an export whose deliberate values you want to keep.
What this workflow produces
- For editing: the supported requested field changes, checked by reopening the output.
- For cleaning: the supported removable metadata set reported for that operation.
What it does not promise
- Metadata editing is not available for every file format or packet structure.
- Signed, provenance-bearing or ambiguous packets may remain read-only.
- An empty supported field list is not an anonymity guarantee.
Retained
- Your original and previous completed outputs.
- Read-only rendering information and unsupported fields as stated by that operation.
Not checked
- Every EXIF/IPTC/Office property, PDF page/object packet, or identifying word inside visible content.
- Names in filenames or copies outside this tab.
Understand the evidence
Successful editing verifies the requested field intent; a removal receipt verifies only the cleaning scope. Neither check substitutes for the other.
Processing, comparisons and verification receipts stay local. PixelRinse sends no product-usage events. Payment and legacy license upgrades are separate online actions that never include selected file contents, names, hashes or metadata.
Common questions
More answers
Does editing metadata preserve the values I write?
Editing is a separate operation from cleaning. Requested writes and removals are reopened and checked before export.
Technical details and limits
The image editor supports standard XMP in single-picture JPEG/PNG while other bytes, including EXIF/IPTC and rendering information, are unchanged and read-only. The PDF editor handles Info properties and supported catalog XMP, not every page/object packet. Signed/provenance-bearing and ambiguous packets may be read-only. A later explicit Clean operation can remove deliberately written values; it is not automatically applied after editing.
In an inspection, what do none found and partial mean?
None found only means no fields in the supported readable scope; it is not proof that nothing is hidden.
Technical details and limits
Partial means extraction covered only part of the file because some content was unread or the scope was limited. Inspection removes nothing, and unavailable is not the same as empty.
Can I keep copyright but remove GPS?
No. Selective removal, such as keeping copyright while removing GPS, is not available in this release.
Technical details and limits
Custom presets for retaining specific EXIF fields are listed as future work on the privacy page. Today PixelRinse removes the supported metadata set or leaves the file alone.
